MVP Offers Top of the Line Winders to Produce Quality Pressure Vessels

Share

Pressure vessels are containers designed to hold liquids, vapors, or gasses at high pressures, typically above 15 pounds per square inch. These vessels are commonly used in the petroleum refining and chemical processing industries, and in products such as storage tanks, boilers, and heat exchangers. As one of the leading manufacturers of composite application equipment, Magnum Venus Products (MVP) offers 4-axis winders that are extremely precise, allowing the fabrication of high-quality pressure vessels for use in a variety of industries and applications.

Key Specifications Cover Pressure Vessel Design, Manufacture, and Operation

The immense forces created inside a pressure vessel mean that if it were to rupture accidentally, the results can be incredibly dangerous and even fatal. A sudden breach could lead to the release of poison gas, fires, and even violent explosions. Pressure vessel safety is paramount, which is why pressure vessels are regulated by engineering authorities backed by legislation. In the United States, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers covers pressure vessels in Section VIII of the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC). Design specifications involve parameters such as maximum safe operating pressure and temperature, safety factors, corrosion allowances, and minimum design temperatures to prevent brittle fracture. Construction is assessed using nondestructive testing, such as ultrasonic inspection, radiography, and pressure tests. Finally, operation is evaluated using a combination of hydrostatic and pneumatic testing.

Composite Materials Offer Distinct Advantages over Steel

Traditionally, pressure vessels were made of steel. However, to manufacture a cylindrical or spherical pressure vessel, rolled and forged pieces must be welded together. Unfortunately, the mechanical properties of steel achieved by rolling or forging can be adversely affected by welding. In addition to mechanical strength, impact resistance and corrosion were also concerns with steel. Today, pressure vessels are increasingly made of composite materials, such as filament wound composite using carbon fiber held in place with a polymer. The extremely high tensile strength of carbon fiber gives these vessels a number of advantages over steel including a better price to performance ratio, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance. But the use of composite materials requires advanced manufacturing techniques.

MVP has the Experience and Expertise to Produce High-Quality Pressure Vessels
